App Review :: She Reads Truth

A few weeks ago a lovely young lady was asking about women’s devotionals on our Facebook group and we had some really great suggestions! One came up called She Reads Truth, an online devotional for women, with devotional plans studying the different books of the bible or different topics.

Today I am not going to touch on the doctrine of the devotions, as I have not had a good enough look through them for that. However what I would like to talk about is their App. Yes, a She Reads Truth App! And it is pretty cool!

This app can be downloaded on your devices, both IOS and Android,

so it can work on any tablet, smart phone or iPod. It is downloadable via the She Reads Truth website or via Google Play or iTunes.

Now, there are a number of reasons I love this app and I hope to list them out for you in the next few paragraphs.

  1. It has the full Bible

The She Reads Truth app has the full bible on the app in its own section so that you can access your bible when you are out and about as well as at home. It has the ESV, NIV and KJV, which are all acceptable versions in our Reformed Churches around the world, as well as a few others. Unfortunately there is no NKJV, however, it can be of great use to compare other translations like the NIV to your printed NKJV.

  1. You can take Notes

Another great element of this app is that it has an area where you can take notes on your devotions. These notes are dated and also allows scripture links so that when you reread them you can quickly access texts you are referring too.

  1. Bookmarking

You can bookmark inspirational texts or text that you want to refer back to in the future. Any text you find striking can be found back at the tap of a screen and your bookmarks can’t fall out like in a print bible. This one is a fabulous point for me; my bookmarks are always getting lost!

  1. Wallpapers

She Reads Truth has a bunch of lovely screen wallpapers to remind you of striking texts every time you look at your phone or tablet. I always love a cute quote picture and I am sure a lot you do too and it is such a great way to dress up our devices rather than having pictures of our latest celebrity crush or movie poster.

  1. Devotional Reminder

My personal favourite! Life gets busy and sometimes we keep putting off devotions until its too late and we are too tired. But with the She Reads Truth app you can set a reminder to spend time with God, and focus on your quiet time with Him. You can set the reminder for any time of the day, so if you want to be reminded to do your devotions you can set aside some time each day and get yourself into a routine.

  1. Devotional Plans

Although I said I wasn’t going to touch on the devotional plans I just wanted to make mention of how they are set out because they are really well planned. Some plans like The Bible In A Year are free, while others are a few dollars to purchase for your ‘bookshelf’. The Bible in a Year plan is a great one as it set you a plan of chapters of the bible to read to get you through the whole book in a year. Others have a passage and then a text and devotion to read which can also be a great as the scripture passage is right there. There is also a marked as read feature so that you can keep track of where you are in the plan.

All in all, I feel that this app is a great way to organize and follow your devotions, even if you are not using the plans they have given. It is a great way to keep track of your thoughts, read your bible on the go and bookmark important passages. It is also great for helping you keep a devotional routine where we can serve God and delve into His word each day.

Believe :: Filling our Minds

What consumes our mind

I was doing my routine check of Pinterest during my coffee break and this little quote came up on my feed. It was something I needed to hear but something so simple that put everything into perspective for me.

How often do we let out minds be consumed with anything but God? How often do we think of the future, our worries, our questions and our fears; or even just thinking about unholy things, watching movies or shows that are not wholesome or reading things that don’t honour God? I will often be thinking and questioning why I am single, why I am struggling to find work as a designer, why I struggle with anxiety. But by doing this I am allowing my mind to be consumed by my desires and my worries instead of filling it with love and passion for God. We quickly get caught up in life; filling our time with daily tasks, going to bed so tired that devotions seem futile, barely making time all day to spend quality time with God. And then we question why we feel like we are lacking spiritually or are not feel growth in faith and knowledge. We wonder why we feel distant from God or have less joy in our lives.

But I can tell you this, if we spend our days thinking of God, talking about Him, talking to Him and doing our tasks for Him, we will feel our faith grow and we will feel closer to Him. We will feel less anxious and more willing to accept what God has set on our path. So I encourage you today and every day to think positively and to consume your mind with God.

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Hymn 48 :: Our guide to feeling at peace

Hymn 48 2

Have you looked at Hymn 48 lately? Have you sung it? It is truly an eye opening song, with a lot of comfort and grace poured into it. It is such a good reminder to us daily, and I challenge you to pick up your Book of Praise and have a look at it. Take in those words and take it upon yourself to heed the advice given.

I am an anxious person, it is something that I have come to realize and work on constantly to trust more in God. But this hymn, especially verse 2, highlights why we must not be anxious; why we would be far better off if we stop our worrying and instead trust in God. When was the last time you felt more calm when you were anxious? See what I mean, anxiousness is the opposite of calm, so how could it make you feel better to worry? But if we put our worries aside and have faith in Him, God will comfort and calm us for He “will never those disown who put their trust in Him alone.” (Hymn 48:4)

Let go of your worries, and trust God and His plan for you.

Finding Contentment

Tears stream down your face; or maybe just in your heart. You are unhappy, upset and feel as though life couldn’t get any worse. You feel down, you feel jealous; nothing seems to take that haunting feeling away. That feeling of discontent.

The reality is, in this day and age we are taught to want, want, want; but we need to be happy with what we have. Sometimes it can be easy to say we are content because we have all the physical objects we need or want. That we have taught ourselves to be happy with the things we have. But contentment goes much further than material goods. All to often we struggle with comparing our lives to that of another person,; a friend, sibling, celebrity. Saying or thinking things like if only I had her personality I would be happy or if only I had a boyfriend like hers I would enjoy life or when I have a job like hers I might be content. We need to remember that God has granted and blessed us with this life and we need to be thankful for the situation he has given us.

We need to remember 2 things; first, each situation has a struggle, there is no person who has a perfect life, which is the reality of living in a sinful world. Second, when we get that situation, that job, that boyfriend, life won’t feel better; we will still feel discontent because we constantly want more. So instead of wanting more, we need to be grateful for what we have and thank God for that everyday; no situation will bring more joy than a relationship with God, so strive for that rather than constantly wanting things we do not have.

There is no fix to this, no technique to try or medicine to take; it still won’t go away. It’s like an addiction, we will constantly struggle and fight for the rest of our lives. But in God’s mercy we can come to Him and ask for help, ask for forgiveness and comfort and strength. And know that in God’s time, He will grant you what He has planned for you, be it the job He designed for you, the boy He set for you to marry, or what ever you hope and dream about. And try to remember, you can want things, pray for things and ask for things, just try not let it consume you, for you will only become more hurt and ungrateful.

Inspire :: We are still learning

I am a pessimist; I constantly need to fight to be thankful, trusting and happy. I am also a sinner; constantly making mistakes, falling down on the job and being negative towards the life God has given. But I am also a child of God; asking for His forgiveness, His strength and His comfort as I go through this life. So as we embark on this new blog, this new project, I want you to know that what I write is just as much a pep talk to me as it is meant as an encouragement for you. We are all learning, and through this blog I hope and pray that we can join together as girls of grace, as children of God and followers of His word so that we can learn together. Because, you know what, we are going to be learning for the rest of our lives. We are going to make mistakes, we are going to fall but we need to bind together and lift each other up, encourage each other in God’s word and call each other accountable, so that we may serve Him and grow together as godly women.

Inspire :: Seeking the Talents God has given you

Discovering your talents can be hard. Figuring out what you are good at can be difficult and trying not to compare yourselves to others along the way can be challenging. Part of being sinful human beings is not being thankful for the strengths God has given and constantly wanting to be something or someone we are not. What we all need to realize is that God made us different for a reason. He made us all having different strengths and talents so that together we could work as a team to support each other. Each person is like a different part of the body; we cannot have 4 hands and no feet, just like we cannot have all leaders and no followers, all talkers and no listeners. We all have different talents so that we can work together and complement each other, working together as a communion of saints.

Understanding this means that we cannot become ungrateful for the things we are not good at, instead we need to realize that God has a plan for us and wants us to follow His will for us so that we may serve Him the way He wants us to. It also means we need to develop what we are good at, not becoming lax and lazy but instead using our strength to serve Him. Realizing this means we can be happy and not afraid to be different; some people are good at sport, some people are really creative; others are good at being a comforter and counselor, helping those who are struggling. What we also need to remember is that even if we have a strength in something, we may not be strong in all areas of this. Some who are creative may have a talent in writing, others in sewing, others in drawing and another in photography. Be thankful for what you are talented in and try not to compare yourself to those who are good in other areas. Admire them, but also be content with the strengths you have, for getting down will only cause you to be bitter and resentful and this is not pleasing to God.

So let us all work together to encourage each other to develop and be thankful for the talents we have received, and let us use them to the honour and glory of His name.

Make :: DIY Coloured Pushpins

Image 1

I am all for using things other than for their intended purpose. I like to think of it as being resourcefulness, creative and flexible but maybe it’s just because it feels a bit rebellious, and that feels kind of fun. I am also all for doing things cheaply, and most of the time the proper way of doing things is way too expensive! So today I have a fun, quick and cheap way of making coloured pushpins.

Most fancy pins cost a mint and who can justify a 12 pack of pins for $10? Not me! So instead I have gotten some cheap nail polish and covered the top of my plain pins with some bright and fun colours.

Cheap is the key word here, I probably wouldn’t suggest using your mum or sister’s OPI nail polish, keep it to clearance or cheap nail polish like BYS. It is up to you though, if you are happy to use what is around the house, by all means do, because I will let you in on a bit of a secret, I do that! I have some OPI liquid sands nail polish that works a treat on this, but I also have some great glittery BYS nail polish that works just as well.

For this tutorial I am using Australis polish, so not dirt-cheap but the colours were just wonderful! It is also a lot cheaper than buying enamel/oil based paint and you can use the nail polish for your nails anytime. Nail polish is great for this as it gives a smooth glossy finish and comes with a brush that works perfectly for applying it to the pins.

Image 2

What you will need:

  • Nail polish of your choice
  • Thumbtacks
  • A piece of thick cardboard or balsa wood

Image 3

So first of all, push the pins into the balsa wood or cardboard. Try to keep them straight so that when applying the polish the coating stays evenly on the pin. Also don’t push them all they way into it so that the top is touching the surface of the board, so that if polish drips off it won’t stick the pin to the board.

Image 4

Take the nail polish and spread it generously over the top of the pins, this gives a nice thick and smooth coat and covers all the imperfections of the pins. Because there is a slight ridge on the edge of thumbtacks, the polish doesn’t go over the edge, it just makes a thicker coating.

Image 5

So now is the waiting game. Since the coating is thick it is best to leave for at least 12 hours just to make sure its dry, but the wait is completely worth it and they come out so smooth and so much more pretty than a plain push pin!

Join the fun and have a go at this, it is super quick and easy. Choose the colours to match your workspace or have fun with it and add some glitter into the mix, but seriously jazz up your pinup boards and make being organized a little bit more exciting!
